Healthy Soil = Healthy Fruit: Our Commitment to Biodiversity 🌱

We take soil health very seriously around here! One of our guiding principles is that biodiversity is the foundation of a flourishing ecosystem. To produce healthy fruit, we first inspect the health of our soil. 🌱

We began soil testing last fall to assess how much active biology was present in the new block to be planted. πŸͺ± Our goal was to ensure that the environment in which we were planting supported microbial activity, particularly to support the development of vigorous root systems for newly planted trees. Immediate microbial engagement with new roots is crucial for helping our trees establish strong and healthy root systems, especially in the first three years of their life.

To keep our soil healthy, we incorporate biochar for carbon, and compost for nutrition and humus – crucial building blocks for soil structure and fertility. When it comes time to plant, we utilize V-trellises to enhance light penetration, which can often lead to higher yields of fruit and helps us make efficient use of our space.Β

Every farming decision we make here is intentional, ensuring the highest quality fruit we can produce!
